Relieve Pain & Restore a Damaged Tooth
A root canal is a relatively simple procedure that our dentists can perform to prevent further damage to a tooth and the need for an extraction. It effectively relieves pain from an infected or damaged tooth while restoring its function.
During the procedure, your dentist removes decay and bacteria from inside the tooth to stop the infection from spreading, then restore the healthy portion of the tooth.
Most patients experience minimal discomfort, and with proper care, a treated tooth can last a lifetime.
That said, we understand that some people become anxious about having a root canal. To help nervous patients get the treatment they need, we offer a variety of dental sedation options. At Rouge Valley Dental Care, we're here to help.
The Root Canal Procedure
A root canal is a procedure in which your dentist removes diseased material (blood vessels, nerves, and other tissues) from the interior of a damaged tooth. Without a root canal, the tooth's condition will continue to deteriorate, leading to ongoing discomfort and the need for an extraction.
To begin the procedure, an anesthetic will be used to numb the area. Then, your dentist will remove the diseased tissue from the tooth. Next, the inner chamber will be thoroughly cleaned and filled with medicated material to prevent infection. To finish the procedure, the tooth is generally capped with a dental restoration, such as a dental crown.
